Writer’s Block

Ugh.  I cannot write. How many times do I hear from my students that they THINK they can't write?   They can't write an essay.  They can't respond to short answer questions.  They can't write a speech.  Maybe you feel like you can't write because of your inner dialogue.  You CAN write.  Writing is merely putting your thoughts on paper.  At times, we stumble with writing because we think we need to get it perfect the first time.  What if you begin with just writing?  Don't think about the mechanics and content.  Unfortunately, as a teacher, I know that we can often limit the creativity of our students by giving too much feedback about the mechanics.  I am sorry.  I am sure in my career I have done that, too.  However, when you begin writing, disregard your audience: write for you.  Eventually, you will think about the mechanics, content, and intended audience.  The revisions can come later.  I have also heard from students that they speak better than they write.  What if you try "voice to text" on your phone?   Would it be easier to dictate your thoughts rather than type them?  By telling yourself that you cannot write, you are stifling your voice.  Your voice represents your center for communication, ability to speak your truth, and creativity.  You CAN write.  You merely need to find a way to access it.
